THE RETURN OF THE WINNIPEG JETS

35,000 fans vs. 200 fans? No contest.
It's comical to listen to the fans in Phoenix talk about anyone trying to take 'their' team from them - Puleeeze! It would be like if Blogger shut down tomorrow and I was the first in line to cry, "Foul!"

(This site is about a week old.)

  6. Born in Winnipeg, live i Australia (still can skate too!!!).....loved and followed the Jets.
    Wish they were back.
My brother tells me however, the new stadium in the heart of the city is not sufficient to NHL standards! What does this mean for a return?

  7. In my humble opinion, we first must wait for this next season to play out...I think Phoenix has one more kick at the can before they call it a day. Not that Phoenix is the only option...but they are clearly hurting by losing so much money every year. The people of Glendale won't want to cover that 25 million dollar bill via taxes every year for long!

The MTS Centre is tiny for NHL standards...but this isn't the real issue just yet. Bettman is trying to fill each major American region with a team to help to secure a Major Network Television deal. Phoenix is a big part of what he is trying to do. I wonder if the Yotes won't end up in Vegas?!? It's the general region that is needed.

Back to Wpg - I think that if the money is there to buy the team, Winnipeg will be fine. They will at least break even as it is for a few years which will buy them time to build a new NHL Arena...or possibly expand the MTS Centre - but there isn't much room in the building for this...and additional parking will be tough downtown. The old Arena was a better location for parking. even if a Winnipeg team loses a little money for the first few years, it won't be 25 million dollars (like in Phoenix) and the projected owner (David Thomson) has money to spare, if they should need it.

Many of the bigger NHL Arenas don't sell out...so Winnipeg's numbers will be good enough to keep up for a while. The MTS Centre is also very short on corporate opportunities as well - there is only about 60-ish luxury boxes. This is simply not enough!

So yeah, they can get by for a few years with it...but they will need to rebuild if they want to excel and not end up losing the team again.

    Thanks for the post!

So do they have a rink there down under for you to lace 'em up once in a while?
