Do NOT give the CHIMPS hockey sticks!

So...chimpanzees were smarter than the New Jersey Devils up until 1995?

"The Trap" reached prominence with the New Jersey Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup victory.

Just prior to this, Teemu Selänne had his Record-Breaking Rookie Season with the Winnipeg Jets - He scored 76 goals in the 1992–93 NHL season. (He is ALSO the holder of the Rookie Point-Scoring Record with 132 points.)

Thanks to the chimps--and incidentally, the New Jersey Devils--this Scoring Record by a Rookie will likely hold for our lifetime...and then some. The incredible goal-scorers of today are hitting around 50 goals a season...and this isn't their Rookie Season that we're talking about!

In the video below, chimpanzees show how to implement the Trap to perfection.

Watch the AMAZING video:

Don't feel bad New Jersey fans - think of your team as "the missing link" between chimps and the rest of the NHL!

The real beauty of this, is that Teemu helped to secure the Winnipeg Jets' place in history (correction: Helped it to be MORE secure!)...and a big "THANK-YOU" goes to the chimps AND to the New Jersey Devils for implementing the Trap so effectively.

Who knows how long the record would have held without the over-use of the Trap, but with it, this Teemu Selänne/Winnipeg Jets record is fairly secure...wouldn't you say?

DON CHERRY ON THE HOUR

Cherry seems to really like the chances for Winnipeg getting another NHL team. He makes the point that the Coyotes are only averaging about 11,000 fans per game this season. Unfortunately, he fails to include that this was about the same average for the games in Winnipeg for our last NHL season.

However, things have changed in Winnipeg in that the MTS Centre is a busier and more lucrative venue--in general--than the Arena ever was. Throw in the relative strength of the loonie and a more reasonable salary cap...and we may be cooking with gas.

I also think that Winnipeg (now) has something to prove...so that could change things a bit as well.

Anyway, draw your own conclusions as to the validity of Cherry's opinion. Will have to wait and see about his opinion of his movie!

MAYBE THE CANUCKS AREN'T SO BAD...

"Vancouver's hottest Facebook girl - February, 2008"

>>> Chantel Elloway <<<

Aren't we ALL really Canucks at heart?

I mean what's the harm in (temporarily) giving the team our support?

I HAVE always liked their logo.

Bobby Lou was great for us in the Olympics; maybe we owe them one...

...you know, just in the meantime.

THE WINNIPEG JETS' FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT...

I ask you, what is the most unbelievable thing about this picture?

Doesn't this fudged "reality" seem more plausible than the actual truth?

Winnipeg fans finally get their Jets back as long as they promise to wear shades to every game...or 3D Hockey!!?

Are you kidding me?

So now the sport is SO weak that we need to resort to trickery and gimmicks to spoon-feed it to the non-hockey markets?

The game is already MORE than entertaining enough, just as it is.

I mean what next, pucks that look like fireballs?! C'mon!!

Anything, but to simply admit that maybe a few too many "fans" just don't understand nor appreciate the game.

Meanwhile in Phoenix--and don't get me wrong, it's great that they have had a better season than the NHL Jets ever did--the GOOD news is that the Coyotes are ONLY going to lose $25 million this year!! Break out the champagne - better make it Baby Duck.

I happened to be in the States for the Olympic Gold Medal game this year. I was lucky enough to meet up with the ONLY other Canadian in the bar. While we were both angered about that late Team USA goal in the 3rd, we also both marveled at how long it took for the Americans in the bar to even realize what had actually happened! I swear, about 20 seconds went by before a collective cheer broke out. They didn't even know why they were cheering...except that they had earned another shot at a Gold Medal.

And when Canada did eventually squeak out the win, I didn't even hear a single groan! It was business as usual on both sides: We asserted our dominance in our nation's top sport, and they ordered another round.

It only makes sense that Hockey should be played where the Hockey fans are!

Luckily, while we're waiting for a team in Winnipeg...we have a little high-tech hockey of our own going on to help us pass the time:

"I guess I wouldn't mind seeing ONE game in 3D," I whispered...

I hope the Jets comes back...like soon!

'And Uh, But Uh' w/GILHEN & HAWERCHUK

Great orators, they weren't...but the NHL hockey is greatly missed in the Peg.

BRING'EM BACK WITH BETTER MUSIC

Here is a couple of 'BRING'EM BACK' montages - the music is brutal and time is really no excuse for this kind of fromage...

I find it particularly ironic that this 'Jump' remix (a bad enough idea in itself) has reworked the line, 'Nothing gets me down'...it starts to kick in with a shot of the old arena - umm, technically, something did get 'it' down: Explosives...although the resilient "White House" did (actually) take cranes to be PULLED down...

...but, I digress.

Still miss the hockey - Enjoy.

This sounds like an early "Loverboy" Demo--before they fired their keyboard player with the tone issues--that could have easily ended up on "The Karate Kid" soundtrack after they brought David Foster in to clean things up.

WINNIPEG-BORN JONATHON TOEWS

Toews played a huge part in bringing the Men's Hockey Gold medal home to Canada this past Sunday. Whomever scored first (between the U.S. and Canada) went on to win every game of the Olympics...so obviously, scoring first in the Gold Medal showdown was HUGE! Winnipeg-born Jonathon Toews (currently captain on the Chicago Blackhawks) started off the game with exactly that - THE FIRST GOAL!!

That goal would end up making all the difference in the world since Canada went on to (BARELY) win by only one goal. Crosby redeemed himself with a 5-hole, sudden death OT goal. Crosby was stopped by the stellar Ryan Miller in an earlier breakaway that left many Canadian fans exasperated and wondering if Crosby might have lost his chance for Olympic glory...apparently not!

This is GREAT for Canadian Hockey. Somehow though, the game reminded me of the famous Jimmy Conners quote: 'I hate losing more than I like winning.' Canada was very lucky to squeak this game out!

Even though this is a (minor) blow for American hockey and a boost for Canadian hockey, as far as the NHL is concerned, I originally anticipated that a BIG win would help Bettman to realize that Canada is (still) the powerhouse of the world when it comes to hockey...and therefore, he may have even more pressure on him to relocate some of these U.S. teams that are not pulling in the fans to their games. After hearing some discussion on television here and there, I am more inclined to think that Bettman might instead consider just eliminating some teams instead relocating. This obviously worries me about Winnipeg's possibilities of getting a team.

I can't help it think that a complete BLOWOUT would have really hammered the point home. Oh well...one thing they can't take away from us: A born-and-raised Winnipegger drew first blood in the most important game of the Winter Olympics this year. So, you can imagine that Winnipeg Hockey is even stronger than it was prior to the Olympics - hard to fathom...but TRUE!

Congrats to Sydney Crosby - what a year for 'The Face of Hockey': The Stanley Cup and a Gold Medal!

By the way, (although I did tweet about it) I apologize for not officially recognizing the female National Hockey Team's accomplishments in this 2010 Winter Olympics as well - They dominated in a way that the men's team couldn't - Congrats to all!

It's safe to say that CANADA (still) RULES HOCKEY mofos!

LES DALES HAWERCHUK - DALE HAWERCHUK

Probably the most rocking song about hockey...ever. 'Big League,' by Tom Cochrane, may have more heart? '50 Mission Cap,' about Bill Barilko of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was more popular. Stompin' Tom never rocked like this...and that song about Wayne Gretzky by 'The Pursuit of Happiness' was awful...Gretzky did 'rock', but that little ditty certainly did NOT! No offense to Moe and the gang, I will acknowledge that the TPOH album 'Love Junk' was one of Canada's best! Anwyay, there is a slew of bands that have pretty good hockey songs...OK, how about that this is DEFINITELY the most rocking song 'ever' (whispered sheepishly) in the 'Dale Hawerchuk' genre?!

I'm including the 'translated' version of 'Dale Hawerchuk' that I found as well. There are some amusing lines that add to my appreciation of the track. The translator could use some translating help himself...but you get the idea.

"if I'm alone in front of the net, I swear to you I put this f'n sh*t top net"

This is the type of funny line (nice rhyme guy!) that makes me believe that this guy actually plays hockey...compared to someone like Gord Downie and his hyper-cerebral musings. BUT, Gord was a goalie in minor hockey and he played for a bantam team which won an Ontario championship in 1979...so what do I know.

Ah Screw it, I'm going to try to write a tune about Morris Lukowich - I feel confident that it will (also) be the most rocking tune in its umm...genre.

TWJN

PS. The Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver to become the Colorado Avalanche before the 1995-96 season. The primary reason was financial. The Canadian dollar was only worth about 0.70 U.S., so the salaries were very expensive since they are in American dollars. In addition, Quebec City, though very loyal to hockey, is quite small. I'm not sure what the populations at the time were, but Quebec City is currently around 500,000 while Denver is around 5,500,000. To spell it out, that is 11 times the population of Quebec City.

PPS. As a result of the (current) poor economy in the U.S., several American teams are on thin ice. (Hockey puns are my biz...and biz is good.) The Loonie is kicking ass and only looks to improve: Michael Woolfolk, Senior Currency Strategist at BNY Mellon, said that he expects the Canadian dollar to hit parity by midyear and rise to $1.10 U.S. by the end of the year. Even though the salary cap is somewhat high, there has to be a better chance of consistently bringing in revenue in Winnipeg over some of the current franchises that are south of the border. The times are changing in our favor and it appears to have strongly increased Winnipeg's chances of getting another NHL team - still named "the Jets," of course!

DAVID TO SLAY GOLIATH IN WINNIPEG

Come on David...become the hero that you were born to be.

Think of American hockey as "Goliath."

David Thomson is Canada's richest citizen...and he owns a stake in the MTS Centre via True North Sports & Entertainment Ltd.

What's left?

Granted...a couple of things...but it's getting there. This link nicely breaks it down:

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/mts-centre-has-nhl-capacity-78501967.html

At this point, with Phoenix actually doing well this year, time is needed to see how they do in the Playoffs...if they do well, they aren't going anywhere.

Bettman has recently proclaimed as much and a winning playoff run will only cement his resolve...this team in Phoenix was one of his babies and he wants it to succeed.

Most cities get behind anything that wins and draws attention (or money) to their city...fans or not.

GREAT TEEMU SELANNE TRIBUTE!

Not too many real-life hockey (or otherwise) stories end in a Hollywood fashion the way that Teemu Selänne's did. Over the course of his career, he dealt with injuries, a fading spirit, a lost season (although this gave him the time he needed to recuperate) and over-zealous player obstruction, which was finally outlawed. He truly fought like hell (in nearly every sense) to overcome the odds and FINALLY win that f'n cup - it only took 1041 NHL games. Oh...and he still going!

Jari Kurri holds the current record: 601 career goals.
